"To be, or not to be"- IAS or IIM

Everybody at some point or the other comes to this stage where he needs to decide whether to go for IIMs or to be an IAS. I am not talking about those lucky guys who always knew from their school days that they have to appear for civil services in coming future. This post is for the people who are little confused or in dilemma to choose IAS or IIMs as its not a wise decision to prepare for both and then landing at nowhere.
I also faced this dilemma 1 year back so I know how important it is to clear your mind and then moving on aiming at the bird's eye toward your chosen path. I hope this post will help people who have just planned or planning to prepare for civil services exam but little doubtful of their choice of IAS over MBA.
It all started when I was working as a software engineer in a big MNC like everybody else in Hyderabad. Somehow i was not satisfied with what i was doing, I always had this feeling something somewhere was missing. Being a graduate from IITK the obvious choice was to prepare for IIM but then after completing two years of MBA things would remain the same- the same rate race throughout, thats how the idea of IAS came to my mind and I started collecting more information about IAS. And once you are bitten by civil services bug then there is no going back :)
So let me share my rational analysis on IAS Vs IIM, actually I wrote this article few months back in some IAS community on Orkut as a reply to a query. That reply was appreciated by many so I thought to publish the same article as my first blog and this way it can help many more IAS aspirants.

IAS Vs IIM:

1. Money: An IIM guy earns lot of money to make his life comfortable, but an IAS officer already gets all the facilities so he doesnt need that much of money. ie: an IAS can go abroad for higher studies (paid by government), many foreign trips etc.. Anyways happiness and satisfaction is more important than money.

2. Metro life: IAS officers are invited to attend VIP parties and big functions both in and outside the country, an IIM guy doesnt get this much of attention.
Its true that they get remote working places in the beginning of the career but i think thats the best part of an IAS officer they get a chance to work every where ranging from remotest area to the most happening place of the country. It just depends on how you look at it. Anyways multiplexes, pubs, discos can only give u temporary happiness.

3. Political Pressure: That's a part of life and inescapable. Even an IIM guy has a lot of pressure from his boss, client, market force, economy, competitors etc. Political pressure is everywhere directly or indirectly.

4. Independent thinking and innovation: Many senior IAS officers get a post of CEO, head of departments, board members, advisers etc. of public/ public-private companies.

5. An IAS has a power to change peoples life just by doing his duty. He can help many people (even unknowingly) and can spread happiness and contribute a lot in building up a great nation. But an IIM guy can help only his family and friends.

6. Diversity: An IIM guy does same type of work all his life and is surrounded by people of same type/intellect . But an IAS officer gets different posts, new challenges, and have to work with people of every type ranging from highly intellectuals to the illiterate politicians.

Friends, I must say that I am not against IIM guys :) I have many friends who are IIM grads, they r doing really good and are very happy and satisfied with their life. So its a personal choice whether to go for IAS or IIM depending on what u want frm life.

Anyways for me all the above things are just secondary, an IAS tag with my name will be enough to keep me going... :)

  2. Hie Abhee,
Like u said that an IAS can go to abroad for further studies ..So my question is that if I visit a foreign college as in management colleges, there are chances that I get a private job in that country ...so will the govt. still pay me even if they know that in future I may not serve them??

    Thanks,

  3. I think the guy who wrote the article is someone who failed to get into the IIM and is probably trying for IAS because I've never seen an comparison as silly as this one.

Dear readers, read the following points and you'll understand what the difference is.

1)Nature:IAS is a job oriented exam whereas CAT isn't. If you score high you'll get into the IIM but that doesn't mean you're gonna be in a great position. You have to be very talented and smart as well (which many bookworms aren't). IAS officer works for the INDIAN GOVERNMENT and everybody knows the state of affairs here.

2)Income:A reasonably talented IIM ian starts his career with a monthly salary exceeding 2 lakhs whereas an IAS officer earns around 50000. And do you think the Govt. is going to give him/her facilities worth 1.5 lakhs every month?!!!!! NO. In the corporate world, promotion is based on efficiency and in the Govt. it's based on seniority. For a talented person in the corporate world, there's basically no limit (don't have to be an IIMian either). The only way an IAS officer can match an IIM ian in terms of money is by depending on the stupid dowry system only.

3)Life: An IAS officer can lead a very relaxed life. He/she can apply for leave whenever he wants, can opt go home earlier if he/she wants and the job is generally tension free though sometimes the intervention of politicians can be a huge problem. An IIM ian on the other hand has targets to reach and life generally will be hectic. But if you manage to get into a decent position, you'll get yearly vacations and plenty of money to enjoy. IIM ians generally live in the metros.

4)Status: People in the corporate world have little interactions with the public whereas an IAS officer has more interactions and generally enjoy better status AMONG THE COMMON PUBLIC. But people with reasonable level knowledge knows potential of a PGDM from IIM. I say potential because as I said earlier just because you get into the IIM doesn't mean you're gonna earn a lot but there's definitely the potential.

5)Options: Now this is the best part about being an IIMian. You can always choose a different field of work. ie. If he/she needs to start a business he/she can. The IIM factor will attract a lot of investors. Or if the intention is to change companies or work abroad, that is also possible. An IAS officer is restricted in that sense. But there are many departments within the Govt. to which he can move.

If what you need is a peaceful life with good status and a decent sum of money as salary, go for IAS.

If you're very talented (honest self analysis required) and likes to lead a luxurious life without your father in laws's help and wish to be in the 'elite league' and live life your own way, go for IIM.

This is just my opinion. Everything depends on your level of talent and to some extent, luck.

    2. Sir,as you mentioned above, the job of an IAS is not at all comfy or relaxed. Its a gruelling job.IAS officers cant rest for a minute. If theres a riot or disaster in town, the IAS has to be present there and not the IIM guy.IAS officers do enjoy diverse job opportunities and they can work in ED,CVC,EC,UN,IMF,WHO and numerous such organizations. The IAS can provide better impetus to the country's progress as he is directly involved in the matters of the Government. The IAS job is for lighting millions of lives and not making millions. The IAS is the one who believes in lighting a lamp in the neighbours' houses and being happy and blessed. He is truly a God in the general public's eyes.IIM and IAS have their own potentials but the work environment of an IAS is far more challenging as he has to report to uneducated politicians with a few exceptions.IAS officers formulate the annual budget and are the reason for corruption on one hand and headache for mafia politicians on the other. The IAS still remains the true service of the poor and will continue to be so.And besides seniority, their calibre is appreciated. They get plum postings in PMO and residences in New Moti bagh which many people can only dream of.

  4. The comparison here is too Partial and childish. A talented person can use anything to his advantage. Its ultimately a matter of personal choice. And most of the shortcomings of each case can be overcome. An IAS can choose to work in a metro city if he does well and an iim guy can opt for a better work life balance in a not-so-tense job.

  5. Haha too much from different people.
Let me do a simple judgement.
First of all its about smart hard work in any of them.
And if u have the potential to access any of it.. the iim's and the ias..

Then one simple thing to distinguish is that.. if u want to make ur life much happening then go for iim's and if u can see the life of poor people and thinking of making a one positive change in their life.. go for ias.

    In both cases..
    Goodluck.
